Non-exclusive marketplaces for teacher-authors

Comparison: exclusivity rules

A non-exclusive teacher marketplace lets you list the same resource on other sites and in your own shop. Here is what each platform's own terms say about exclusivity, what a $5 sale pays, and how to keep your listings organized.

Short answer: A non-exclusive teacher marketplace lets you sell the same resource elsewhere. By their own published terms, TPT Basic, Etsy, Classful, Classmade, TeacherStore.io, Payhip, Gumroad and TeachLessons have no exclusivity, and Tes and Boom Learning state none. The main exception is TPT's Exclusive Seller membership, which keeps paid digital educational resources on TPT only.

Which teacher marketplaces are non-exclusive?

Disclosure: TeachLessons runs this comparison and is one of the options listed. Every competitor fact below comes from that platform's own help pages, terms or announcements, linked in each section and in the sources list at the end.

The table sums up what each platform says about exclusivity, what it costs to join, and what one resource sold for $5.00 pays you. The $5 figures assume no discount, no sales tax and one item per order; "about" means a processing fee varies by card or country.

Platform Exclusivity (own terms) Cost to join $5 sale pays Payout
TeachLessons None No fees $3.40 PayPal, USD, monthly by the 15th
TPT Basic None $29 one-time $2.45 Monthly via Hyperwallet
TPT Exclusive Seller (from Jan 1, 2027) Yes: paid digital educational resources on TPT only $59.95 per year $3.88 (Premium pays $4.00 until Dec 31, 2026) Monthly via Hyperwallet
Tes None stated No fee stated $3.00 (new author, 60%) Bank transfer, withdraw from £10/$10
Etsy (US seller) None Possible set-up fee (amount not verified) about $4.08 Etsy Payments to bank
Classful None in its Terms Free about $4.31 Stripe, rolling monthly
Classmade (Free plan) None Free (Pro is paid) about $3.81 Stripe to bank
TeacherStore.io None $99/year after a free trial $4.00 Stripe monthly, $25 minimum
Boom Learning (Boom Store) None stated Paid Publisher membership $4.25 minus a PayPal payout fee PayPal monthly by the 15th
Payhip (Free plan) None $0 per month about $4.31 Instant to your PayPal or Stripe
Gumroad (direct sales) None $0 per month about $4.00 before processing Bank or PayPal, by country

What does TPT's Exclusive Seller membership rule out?

On October 1, 2026, TPT announced that Premium Seller membership closed to new sign-ups that day and ends on December 31, 2026. From January 1, 2027 it is replaced by the Exclusive Seller membership: $59.95 a year, a 77.5% payout rate (Premium pays 80% until December 31, 2026), and a $0.15 transaction fee only on orders under $3.

The exclusivity is wide. Per TPT's announcement and its Exclusive Seller FAQ, these may not be sold anywhere else:

  • digital educational resources
  • memberships or subscriptions that include them
  • licenses for digital educational resources

You may still market elsewhere, including your own website, as long as the purchase is completed in your TPT store, for example through a Buy Now button that links to TPT. Allowed off TPT: non-educational digital items such as clip art and fonts, physical products, courses and PD, Boom Cards and Kindle books. Free resources may be offered on and off TPT, but a resource you give away free elsewhere cannot be sold on TPT. TPT says a breach "may result in penalties".

Timing matters too. Premium sellers who opt in between October and December 2026 must comply by January 1, 2027. Basic sellers, new sellers and anyone joining after that date must comply on sign-up. If you leave Exclusive for Basic after that date, you wait one year before you can rejoin, and the Exclusive fee is not refunded pro rata.

TPT Basic stays non-exclusive: $29 one-time, 55% of the sale price, then $0.30 per resource, per TPT's fee page and Terms of Service. We go through the choice in more detail in Exclusive or Basic: how to decide before December 31, 2026.

Why does exclusivity matter for a teacher-author?

A higher payout rate can be worth it. On a $5 resource, TPT Exclusive pays $3.88 in 2027 against $2.45 on Basic. If almost all your sales already happen in one place, the extra $1.43 per sale may outweigh the rest.

What you give up is harder to put a number on:

Concentration risk

If one platform changes its rates, search ranking or rules, every paid sale you make is affected at once. The October 2026 change itself is an example of how quickly terms can move.

Your own customers

Teachers who find you on social media or through your newsletter have to buy on the platform. You cannot sell them a PDF directly, even from your own site.

Different buyers

UK schools, international schools and homeschool parents often shop in different places. One store reaches the buyers who search there and nobody else.

There is also an exit cost. Once a resource is tied to one store, moving it later means checking dates, removing listings and sometimes waiting out a notice period. Our checklist on exclusivity clauses lists the wording to look for before you sign anything.

Non-exclusive teacher marketplaces, platform by platform

TPT Basic

The largest US marketplace for teacher-authors. $29 one-time to join, 55% of the sale price, then $0.30 per resource, so a $5 sale pays $2.45. Payouts are monthly via Hyperwallet (direct deposit, PayPal, Venmo or wire, depending on your country), no later than the 21st of the following month. No exclusivity. Sources: Seller Fees and Payout Rates, How do I get paid as a Seller.

Tes

Royalties depend on your sales over a rolling 12 months: 60% (Bronze, up to £999.99), 70% (Silver, £1,000 to £5,999.99) and 80% (Gold, £6,000 and up), on the VAT-exclusive price. A 20p/20c fee applies only below £3/$3. A new author's $5 sale pays $3.00. Withdrawals go to a bank account once the balance passes £10/$10. The Tes selling FAQ states no exclusivity rule.

Etsy

A general marketplace. $0.20 per listing, 6.5% transaction fee, and payment processing of 3% + $0.25 for US sellers. A $5 sale pays about $4.08, with further $0.20 renewals as listings renew. No exclusivity. See Etsy's fee policy and the separate Etsy vs teacher marketplaces comparison.

Classful

Free to join. Its own blog article gives a 5% platform fee plus Stripe processing of 2.9% + $0.30, about $4.31 on a $5 sale. Transfers run on a rolling monthly schedule through Stripe. No exclusivity in its Terms; fee source: Classful blog.

Classmade

The Free plan takes 15% per sale and allows up to 10 published resources; Pro (C$29.99 a month or C$299.99 a year) takes 0%. Stripe processing comes on top, so a $5 sale on Free pays about $3.81 with a US card. Its Terms grant a non-exclusive license. Pricing: classmade.co/pricing.

TeacherStore.io

Sellers keep 80% with Stripe fees covered from TeacherStore's share, so a $5 sale pays $4.00, plus a $99 yearly plan after the free trial. Monthly Stripe payouts from $25. Its seller page says "All plans are non-exclusive".

Boom Learning

For interactive Boom Cards only. A paid Publisher membership is required (price not verified). 15% service fee on Boom Store sales, so $4.25 on a $5 sale minus a PayPal payout fee. Paid monthly via PayPal by the 15th, $5 minimum. No exclusivity stated in its help center. Boom Cards are also allowed off TPT under the Exclusive program.

Payhip and Gumroad

Storefronts, so you bring the buyers. Payhip's Free plan takes 5% per sale plus processor fees (about $4.31 on $5); Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50 on direct sales before processing (about $4.00), and 30% on sales through its Discover marketplace. Neither asks for exclusivity. Sources: Payhip pricing, Gumroad pricing.

Lesson Planned and Teacha! (exclusivity not stated)

Lesson Planned (UK) is free and pays 80% with no other fees, monthly by PayPal. Teacha! (South Africa) is free and pays 65%, every second month. Neither page states an exclusivity rule, so read their seller terms before you cross-list. Sources: Lesson Planned FAQ, Teacha! help center.

How does TeachLessons handle exclusivity, and what are its downsides?

TeachLessons has no exclusivity. You may sell the same resources on your own website and on other marketplaces, unless you have signed an exclusive deal elsewhere for that resource. You keep your copyright and give TeachLessons a non-exclusive license for as long as the agreement runs. Removal works by email at any time and takes effect within 60 days.

Per sale, you keep 70% of net revenue, where net is the price paid minus a 3% payment cost. That is 67.9% of the price: $3.40 on a $5 sale. Several platforms above pay more per sale: TPT Exclusive ($3.88 in 2027), Tes Silver and Gold ($3.50 and $4.00), Etsy (about $4.08), TeacherStore.io ($4.00), Boom Store ($4.25 before the payout fee), Classful and Payhip (about $4.31). TPT Basic ($2.45) and a new Tes author ($3.00) pay less.

How do I keep track of which resource is listed where?

Selling in several places only stays simple if you write things down. A spreadsheet with one row per resource is enough.

Column What to record
Resource Title, file name and version number
Platform Where it is listed, with the listing link
Date listed When it went live there
Exclusivity None, or the exact clause and the date it starts
Price The price on that platform and the date of the last change
Free elsewhere? Yes/no; matters under TPT Exclusive
Removal notice How long removal takes (60 days on TeachLessons)
  1. Save the terms. Download or screenshot each platform's fee and seller terms page on the day you join, with the date.
  2. Use one master file per resource. Fix a typo once and upload the same version everywhere.
  3. Check before you change membership. Before you opt in to any exclusive plan, list every place the affected resources appear and remove them in time.
  4. Review quarterly. Compare each platform's current fee page against your notes.

For more detail, see record-keeping across several platforms and can you sell the same resource on several marketplaces.

Who is a non-exclusive setup right for, and what should I check first?

Non-exclusive selling suits you if you already have buyers outside one store (a newsletter, a social following), if you write for more than one market, such as US and UK classrooms, or if you want to test a new channel without risking your main income. It suits you less if almost all your sales come from one platform and its exclusive tier pays clearly more per sale. In that case, run the numbers for your own catalog.

Before you list anywhere new, check:

  • Does any current agreement, including an exclusive plan you opted into, cover this resource?
  • Have you given this resource away free anywhere? Under TPT Exclusive, that blocks selling it on TPT.
  • What does a $5 sale pay after every fee, and how often are you paid?
  • Can you be paid in your country, in a currency you can receive?
  • How do you remove a resource, and how long does that take?

TeachLessons accepts teacher-authors from any country who can receive PayPal payments in US dollars. You apply with the short form, we email you the seller documents, and you send your final files to support@stifo.de. The Seller Program overview explains each step, and sites like Teachers Pay Teachers compares every verified platform in one list.
